Attorney Thomas F. Shebell, Jr.

(In Memoriam, May 5, 2022)

On May 5, 2022, we said goodbye to Judge Thomas F. Shebell Jr., an incredible mentor, guide, friend, and father who had a tremendous legal career.

Born in Asbury Park, N.J., Judge Shebell received his B.A., an LL.B. and J.D. from Rutgers University, where he was President of the Student Bar Association and President of Phi Delta Phi. He later received his L.L.M. from the University of Virginia Law School.

After being admitted to the Bar of New Jersey in 1960, he joined his father’s law firm, Shebell & Shebell LLC, and for 16 years represented both civil litigants and criminal defendants. He then sat as a Judge of the Monmouth County Court, 1976-1978; was appointed to the Superior Court in 1978; and served as Assignment Judge, Vicinage #9, 1980-1983. Judge Shebell was appointed to the Appellate Division of Superior Court in 1983, retiring in 1998 after serving as Presiding Judge of Part G for many years, and on occasion, serving temporary appointments on the Supreme Court.

After retiring from the bench, Judge Shebell returned to Shebell & Shebell in an of-counsel capacity. He provided guidance and insight to the firm’s partners and associates on the handling of specific legal matters and client affairs. In addition, Judge Shebell continued his own practice in the areas of alternative dispute resolution, mediation, and arbitration of complex civil litigation.

During his distinguished legal career, he served as President of the Monmouth County Bar Association and was an active member of over 25 legal and judicial committees. He was also honored with “The Equality in the Courts” award in 1999. Within the legal community, Judge Shebell is remembered as a fair-minded jurist, a prolific writer, a tenacious advocate for his clients, and a compassionate and decent colleague.

Judge Shebell passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 85 on May 5, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. We miss his generosity, introspection, wit, and candor, and we strive to live up to his legacy every day.
